A portable jump starter lets you start a flat car battery without another vehicle. Modern units are compact enough to fit in a glove box and powerful enough to start a diesel engine.
The old way to deal with a flat battery was to find a willing stranger with jump leads. A portable jump starter eliminates this entirely. Modern lithium jump starters are compact lightweight safe to use and also function as a power bank for your phone.
Peak amps is the headline spec on all jump starters. Petrol engines up to 2.0 litre need approximately 400-600A peak. Petrol engines 2.0-4.0 litre need 600-1000A. Diesel engines need 800-1500A minimum as they have much higher compression and require significantly more starting current than equivalent petrol engines. Always buy more amps than you think you need.
Some jump starters include a built-in air compressor that inflates tyres via a 12V connector. This turns a single device into a jump starter and tyre inflator covering the two most common roadside emergencies in one product.

21800mAh capacity with 6000A peak current. Built-in air compressor. LCD screen. Covers all petrol engines and diesel engines up to 10 litres. USB output for phone charging. Rated 4.6 stars from over 1100 orders - the most-ordered jump starter in the Zonify range. The combination of 6000A peak and built-in compressor makes this the most capable and versatile emergency device you can keep in a car.

Connect red clamp to positive terminal of dead battery. Connect black clamp to an unpainted metal earth point on the engine block not the negative battery terminal. Switch on the jump starter. Wait 30 seconds. Attempt to start the car. If it does not start in two attempts wait two minutes before trying again. Disconnect in reverse order: black clamp first then red. Drive for at least 20-30 minutes to allow the alternator to recharge the battery.
Yes provided the peak amps rating matches your engine size. Diesel engines require significantly more starting current than petrol engines. The 6000A unit with air compressor above covers all diesel engines up to 10 litres.
Most units with 20000mAh or more capacity can jump start a petrol car 20-30 times on a single charge or a diesel 10-15 times depending on how flat the battery is.
A battery that goes flat from leaving lights on is not necessarily failed - it just needs a full charge. Drive for 30 minutes and have the battery tested at a garage or Halfords which offer free battery testing. A battery that goes flat repeatedly should be replaced.
Yes - most jump starters include USB outputs that charge phones and tablets at standard or fast-charge speeds. The 21800mAh unit above provides multiple full phone charges alongside its jump starting capability.
